Extract from the Northants Evening Telegraph:-

Monday evening (17th July) saw a further addition to the list of memorably exciting games played on the beautiful green of the Kettering Lodge Bowling Club, when the final of the Singles  competition, under the auspices of the Northamptonshire Bowling Association was brought off.  The competition also qualified the winner for the English Bowling Association's finals to be played at Croydon during the week commencing August 14th.

In the semi-final played during the afternoon, Mr F. Shatford, of the Kettering Lodge had been defeated by Mr A.E. Throssell, of the Northampton Working Mens Club, to the tune of 21-18, Mr F.T. Knight of the Northampton Abington Bowling Club falling a victim by 21-11 to Mr F.H. Swindall of the Northampton West End.

A rare tussle was the final. Mr George Wright acted as umpire. The game was very close until the tenth end, when Mr Swindall was leading 6-4.  For five ends his score remained unaltered allowing Mr Throssell to put up to 14.  At the eighteenth end Mr Throssell had a lead of 16-9, when his opponent pulled up to 18 all.  Finally, with the handicap of a brisk downpour, the West End player laid two, but, with the last shot Mr Throssell just faced the wood and left himself two on.  Having obtained one from the previous end, his fine effort left him the victor by 21-19, and incidentally the holder of the handsome cup, the presentation of which was the raison d'être for the presence of so many prominent bowlers from the town and district.

Adjourning to the club-room, the company inspected with due appreciation the beautiful example of the silversmiths art which was to grace the sideboard of the winner for the next twelve months.  A trophy of the Early Victorian period, of wonderfully charming design and delicate workmanship, it bore the inscription "1922 - Presented BY THE Kettering Bowling Clubs to the Northamptonshire Bowling Association. To be held by the winner of the Single-Handed competition."

At the committee meeting  held on 9th October it was suggested that the AGM be moved from June to January -

this was carried.    Also:-

"Mr George Bull of Wellingborough then presented upon behalf of the Wellingborough & District a splendid silver cup to the Association - to be known as the Pairs Cup for Annual competition for Northants Pairs winners of the EBA County Championships to hold for one year.  Mr Wright, the President received same and returned thanks fir the splendid trophy they have provided and presented Mr F. Swindall the Cup who with Mr Munks of West End BC were the winners for 1922."

EBA Invitational Singles - 26 players invited - County Finalists and Open Tournament Winners.

The surprise of the preliminary round was the defeat of W.F. Wade, the 1923 EBA Champion,

by F. Shatford (Kettering Lodge) 21-1

Wade had one of those days which comes to all bowlers of not being able to do anything right, and with

Shatford on the top of his form, his position was hopeless.

Shatford went on to reach the semi-final where he lost 21-18 to G. Addington of Surrey.
